The Fit Test: How Activewear Is Meant to Fit, and How to Tell When It Doesn’t

A fabric stretched beyond its designed range thins out, which is where opacity goes. It stops springing back, which is where recovery goes. Correct compression feels like even, continuous contact along the whole garment. 03 — The Test
Seven Checks, in Front of a Mirror
Do these in daylight rather than under a warm bedroom bulb, which flatters fabric and hides thinning. Give the whole thing five minutes. It is worth more than an hour of reading size charts.
The squat, watching the fabric
Feet slightly wider than hip width, go down to a full squat, and look over your shoulder at the seat and thigh. You are not judging shape here. You are judging colour. If the black lightens to charcoal, if you can start to see the individual loops of the knit, or if the outline of anything underneath becomes readable, the fabric is being asked to stretch past what it can cover. The sit, watching the waistband

The strain lines

The overhead reach

The twenty-minute mark
Take the garment off after wearing it for a while and look at your skin. A soft, even line at the waist that fades in a few minutes is normal and means the band is doing its job. A deep indentation, a raised welt, or redness that is still there twenty minutes later is not a fit signature. It is a pressure injury in miniature, and it means either the size or the band construction is wrong.
The adjustment count
The most honest test of all, and the only one that requires a real session. Count how many times you touch your clothing during an hour of training. Not to wipe sweat — to adjust. 04 — Reading the Result
Wrong Size, or Wrong Garment?
This is the distinction that matters, because one of them is solved by an exchange and the other never is. Most women assume every fit problem is their size. A significant share of them are not.

The working rule is to size for the measurement that is least able to compromise, and let the garment’s construction absorb the rest.
