The Annoyance Economy: What It Costs You and How RYZ Stays Out of It

Somewhere between the product page and the payment screen, the price changed. Somewhere behind a menu, the cancel button disappeared. This is the annoyance economy: friction that is designed, not accidental, because friction pays. Here is how it works, what it costs, and the rules RYZ holds itself to.

01 — The Idea

What the annoyance economy actually is

The term describes a pattern rather than a single practice. Hold times that stretch until you give up. A subscription that takes one tap to start and seven screens to end. A refund that technically exists but is built to be abandoned. A fee that appears only on the last screen, after the decision has already been made in your head.

The logic is cold and simple. If a fraction of customers will pay a little extra, or forget to cancel, rather than push through the friction, then the friction is worth more than the goodwill it costs. Each individual annoyance is small. Added up across a year, it is a business model. A widely cited US estimate puts the cost to American consumers at around $165 billion annually.

02 — The Indian Picture

What it looks like for an Indian shopper

In India, the name for the mechanics is dark patterns. A Datum Intelligence report published in June 2026 estimated that Indian online buyers lose up to Rs 28,000 crore a year to them, and found that nearly nine in ten online shoppers are affected. Among the practices it tracked: drip pricing, where charges are revealed only at the final step; hidden charges; basket sneaking; subscription traps; false urgency; and forced actions. It reported that hidden charges or drip pricing now affect 63 percent of online payment users, up from 52 percent in 2024.

India's consumer authority has formally listed these tactics as prohibited, and the same report suggested enforcement has had limited success so far. The practical lesson for a shopper is that the rule alone will not protect you. The brand you choose does.

A price is a promise. Every extra step between the promise and the payment is a small breach of it.

03 — The Tell

Four ways to recognise it before you pay

You do not need a report to spot the pattern. You need four habits.

  • Compare the first price with the last. The number on the product page should be the number you confirm. If it moves, ask why.
  • Check for pre-ticked boxes. Insurance, gift wrap, priority handling: anything you did not choose and cannot easily untick.
  • Treat the countdown with suspicion. A timer that resets, or a stock number that never falls, is a prompt, not information.
  • Find the exit before you enter. Look at how returns, refunds and cancellations work before you buy. A brand that hides the exit is telling you something.

04 — The RYZ Standard

The rules RYZ holds itself to

A premium brand is not defined by what it adds. It is defined by what it refuses to do. These are the lines we do not cross.

One price, stated once. Prices on ryzstore.com are final and all-inclusive. The figure on the product page is the figure you pay. Our own order policy says it plainly: zero hidden charges. Where a charge does exist, a handling fee on orders under Rs 1,000 and on cash on delivery, it is written in the shipping policy in advance, not discovered at checkout. Free shipping above Rs 1,000 on prepaid orders is stated as plainly as the fee.

No manufactured urgency. We do not run countdown timers, fake scarcity or pressure copy. If something is limited, the stock level says so once and leaves the decision to you. A garment engineered to last through hundreds of washes does not need to be bought in a panic.

A reachable human. Returns, exchanges and questions go to people you can contact on WhatsApp, by phone or by email, with the process written down in advance. No maze, no bot standing between you and an answer.

No endless sale cycle. Permanent discounting is the annoyance economy's quietest form: it teaches you that the real price is never the listed price. We wrote about why we avoid it in Why RYZ Doesn't Believe in Endless Sales, and why we compete on experience rather than price in Experience the RYZ Difference.

Hold us to it

If you ever find a number at RYZ checkout that you were not shown earlier, write to care@ryzstore.com. We would rather hear it from you and fix it than have you assume it is how we operate.

05 — Why It Matters

Trust is a design decision

The same discipline that goes into a seam goes into a checkout. A garment that holds its shape for years is a quiet promise kept. A checkout that never surprises you is the same promise, kept earlier. Annoyance is cheap to build and expensive to undo. We would rather build the other thing, slowly, and let it compound.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annoyance economy?

It describes business practices that make ordinary customer tasks, such as cancelling, getting a refund or seeing the real price, deliberately tedious because the friction earns the company money. Hidden fees, buried cancel buttons and hard-to-reach support are typical examples.

What are dark patterns in online shopping?

Dark patterns are interface designs that steer shoppers into choices they did not intend to make. Common forms include drip pricing, basket sneaking, subscription traps, false urgency such as countdown timers, and forced actions.

How can I spot hidden charges when shopping online in India?

Compare the price on the product page with the total on the final payment screen before you confirm. Watch for pre-ticked add-ons and fees that appear only at the last step. A brand with nothing to hide shows the same number throughout.

How does RYZ avoid hidden charges?

RYZ prices are final and all-inclusive, so the product page price is the price you pay. The only add-ons, a handling charge on orders under Rs 1,000 and on cash on delivery, are stated in the shipping policy in advance, and RYZ does not use countdown timers or manufactured scarcity.

If you want to see the standard in a single piece, start with the newest arrivals: the Enhance Mesh Fusion Top in Lavender, a padded, open-back top with a built-in bra, or the Softretch Cross-Flow Breeze Tee in Purple, a relaxed open-back tee. Or work out what any piece really costs you with The Wear Count.

The best customer experience is the one you barely notice, because nothing went wrong. That is the standard we build to, in the garment and in the checkout.
