The Padel Edit

What to wear for the fastest-growing court sport in India, before most wardrobes have caught up to it.

A new women's padel tour launched in India this year. Padel has a confirmed place at the 2026 Asian Games. Industry projections put the domestic market on a path toward roughly $300 million within the decade. And yet almost nobody selling activewear in India has written a single word about what to actually wear for it. That gap will not stay open long, which is exactly why it is worth closing now.

Padel looks like tennis from a distance and plays like something else entirely up close: doubles-only, walled in glass and mesh, the ball kept alive by rebounds instead of ending the point. That difference changes what a kit needs to do. This is the wardrobe logic behind it, and what to reach for before your first booking.

01 — The Shift

Why Padel Is Having Its Moment in India, Right Now

Three things happened almost at once. Padel was added to the sport programme at the 2026 Asian Games, giving it an official stage it never had in India before. A dedicated women's padel tour launched domestically this year, run by PadelPark India, the first structured competitive pathway for women in the sport here. And the market itself is being taken seriously by people who track these things: analysts project India's padel market growing toward the $300 million mark over the next decade, on the back of court openings in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

None of that happened because padel is easier than tennis, though it is, in the sense that the smaller court and forgiving walls make it far less intimidating to pick up. It happened because padel is social in the same way pickleball is, doubles-only by rule, built around a table afterward, but with a faster, more athletic rhythm that appeals to a slightly different crowd. It is the sport arriving at the exact moment India's court-sport culture was already primed for it.

What has not caught up is the wardrobe conversation. RYZ has covered tennis and pickleball already, and this is a deliberately separate piece, because padel asks something distinct of a kit. Getting there early, before the category is crowded, is the whole point.

02 — The Difference

Not Tennis, Not Pickleball

Padel is played on a court roughly a third the size of a tennis court, enclosed by glass and mesh walls that the ball is allowed, and often expected, to bounce off. That single rule changes everything about how the body moves. In tennis, a point ends when the ball goes out. In padel, a well-placed shot off the back wall can keep a rally alive for another six or eight exchanges, which means points last longer and the body spends more time in continuous lateral motion, not recovering between bursts.

The serve is underarm, so the overhead shoulder load that defines a tennis kit's design brief matters far less here. What matters more is the hip: constant side-to-side shuffling to cover a doubles court with a partner, deep lunges to reach low balls near the net, and the kind of sudden direction change that comes from reading a wall rebound rather than an opponent's swing. It is a sport of the lower body and the core, not the shoulder.

Tennis asks the most of your shoulder. Padel asks the most of your hip, and of a fabric that can shuffle sideways for six exchanges without once needing a tug.

03 — The Demands

What a Padel Court Actually Asks of Your Kit

Longer rallies mean more total time under load per point than either tennis or pickleball typically produces, and in most of India that time is spent outdoors or in a semi-open facility, in heat. A fabric that traps sweat becomes heavy within a single game, and heavy fabric is exactly what slows down the sideways recovery step a padel rally demands after every wall rebound.

The waistband is doing more work here than in almost any other sport RYZ has written about. A deep lunge toward the glass, repeated a dozen times a set, will expose a waistband that gathers rather than sits flat within the first few points. The same goes for a top that rides up during a reach, or a bra that shifts during a sudden pivot. None of this is decorative preference. It is the difference between a kit you forget and one you are adjusting between every point.

The short version: four-way stretch for the lateral shuffle, a flat waistband engineered to stay put through repeated lunges, and a moisture-wicking fabric built for rallies that run longer than a casual glance at the sport would suggest.

  Tennis Pickleball Padel
Court size Full-size, open Compact, open Compact, walled
Serve Overhead, powerful Underarm Underarm
Rally length Short to medium Short, explosive Long, continuous
Main physical demand Shoulder, sprint power Quick bursts, reaction Hip, lateral endurance
Kit priority Shoulder freedom Support, coverage Waistband stability, breathability

04 — The Kit

Building the Padel Wardrobe

Four decisions cover it, in order of how much they actually matter on court.

01

A top built for torso rotation, not just reach

Padel's underarm serve means shoulder range matters less than the twisting motion of a two-handed backhand off the glass. A fitted, four-way-stretch top with a supportive base underneath lets you rotate through the torso without the fabric binding or riding up mid-swing.

02

A bottom that has already survived the lunge test

A legging or bike short with a flat, contoured waistband, not a gathered elastic one, is the single biggest difference-maker for padel specifically. Lunge deep toward an imaginary glass wall before you buy. If the waistband stays put, it will hold through a full set of real ones.

03

Court shoes, not running shoes

This is the one piece RYZ does not make, and the one worth getting right before anything else. Padel is played almost entirely on artificial turf, and the constant lateral cutting demands a herringbone-tread padel or clay-court shoe. A running shoe, built for forward motion, gives up lateral stability exactly when a sharp direction change needs it most.

04

One thing you did not have to think about

Because rallies run long and the court is small and social, this is a sport played in close view of your doubles partner and whoever is waiting for the next booking. A kit engineered to hold its shape through the match means the last thing on your mind at the net is your waistband, which is exactly where your attention belongs.

The lunge test

Before you buy a bottom for padel, do this in the changing room: drop into a deep side lunge, as if reaching for a low ball near the glass, then reverse it to the other side without standing up fully in between. If the waistband rolls, gathers or needs a tug afterward, it was not built for this sport. If it stays exactly where you set it, you have found your piece.

05 — What We’d Reach For

Getting Ready Before Your First Booking

The Original Swoosh Light-Weight Slim-Fit Top is built with an anti-odour finish and enough four-way stretch to clear a full torso rotation without the fabric fighting back, which is exactly the demand a padel backhand places on a top. Paired underneath with real support, it is a fitted, breathable base that stays out of your way for as long as a rally runs.

Below it, the Core Premium Classic Leggings carry the flat-waistband construction the lunge test is built around, holding their line through repeated lateral drops rather than gathering at the hip. For anyone who prefers a shorter length for the heat, the same waistband logic in a biker short, covered in RYZ's earlier piece on tennis and pickleball, applies just as directly here.

Padel does not need a separate wardrobe from the rest of RYZ's court-ready pieces. It needs the same engineering, pointed at a slightly different set of joints.

Built ahead of the crowd

Most Indian wardrobes have not caught up to padel yet. Yours can, before the first booking.

A sport this new gives everyone the same starting line. The wardrobe you show up in on your first booking will not make you a better player, but it will be one less thing standing between you and the next rally. That is worth getting right early, before the category gets crowded and everyone else catches up.

Questions

The Padel Edit, answered

What should women wear to play padel?

Wear a fitted, four-way-stretch top with real support, paired with a legging, bike short or skort that holds its shape through repeated lunges and sideways shuffles. Padel rallies run longer than tennis points because the ball stays in play off the glass, so prioritise moisture-wicking fabric and a waistband that will not need adjusting mid-rally over anything purely decorative.

Is padel clothing different from tennis or pickleball clothing?

The baseline kit overlaps: a supportive top and a stretch bottom work for all three. The difference is emphasis. Tennis rewards freedom through the shoulder for big overhead swings, pickleball is short and explosive, and padel sits in between, demanding continuous lateral movement and quick direction changes as the ball comes back off the walls. That makes hip and glute mobility, not shoulder range, the priority for a padel-specific kit.

What shoes work best for padel?

Padel-specific or clay-court tennis shoes with a herringbone tread are the standard, because the surface is usually artificial turf or a similar textured court and the sport involves constant lateral cutting. Running shoes lack the lateral stability padel demands and can increase ankle-roll risk during sharp direction changes, so it is worth borrowing or renting court shoes before buying your own.

Where can I play padel in India right now?

Padel courts are still concentrated in a handful of metros, mainly Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, with new venues opening steadily as the sport rides its Asian Games and women's tour momentum. If you do not have a court nearby yet, the same kit works for the sport's closest cousins, tennis and pickleball, so building the wardrobe now means you are ready the moment a court opens near you.
